Rhu 3 – 4 Milngavie Wanderers

Rhu 3 – 4 Milngavie Wanderers

Scorers: Simmy, McKellar (2), Berto

The Wanderers go top of the league gaining all 3 points against another poor performance from a Rhu side lying 11th in the league.

The boys from Milngavie played some really attractive football – stroking the ball from one side of the park to other picking Rhu off at will before running up a 3-1 half time lead with McKellar scoring a double.

The game was to turn on its head in the second half when Rhu were awarded 2 very soft penalties and seemed to want to turn to bully boy tactics as they went searching for their fourth goal.   Most people watching agreed that the tactics Rhu were adopting would have been better suited to Welfare football than the Calley League.

Justice was servered when Milngavie got their fourth goal and the match winner when Mckellar – so often the thorn in so many sides - played an excellent pass to Berto, who beat the offside trap to stroke the ball over the advancing Rhu goal keeper and secure the victory.

Despite a tight score-line there was only going to be one winner in this match.   Good luck to Rhu in what is going to be another tough season.  Everyone at the Wanderers wishes them well.

Scottish Cup – Balmore 2 – 0 Milngavie Wanderers

The Wanderers fall at the first hurdle in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup.

The Wanderers travelled over to Lanarkshire to the villiage of Law looking to take their league form into the Scottish Cup but it was one of those days nothing went for the Wanderers.

The game was played in gale force wind conditions which the home side seemed much happier to play in with the Wanderers never really getting going.  The game was pretty even throughout the match with both teams failing to take advatage of the many chances each team had to stick the ball in the net.

Balmore took the lead in the first half when a corner was met superbly by the oncoming foeward who headered the ball high into the roof of the Wanderers net.  This goal ensured the Wanderers were always chasing the game and no matter how hard the boys tried they just could not find the break through.

The game was over as a contest when in the 82nd minute the Wanderers gave the ball away to easily from a shy deep in their own half – only to see the ball fall nicely to the Balmore forward who stroked the ball into the net to secure their place in the next round of the cup.

Milngavie Wanderers AFC 3 – 1 Gartcosh Utd

Milngavie Wanderers 3 – 1 Gartcosh

Scorers: Simmy, Aldo and Dodgy Hair Cut McKellar

Both teams going into this game were already talking about the game being a 6 pointer.  Gartcosh having never won at Staney Brigg were keen to put this statistic behind them and show that they are genuine title contenders having started the season well.

From the kick off there only looked like there was going to be one winner with the Wanderers firing on all cylinders fielding a strong 11 and having an equally strong 11 on the touch lines not stripped.  In the opening 20 minutes the Wanderers could have been 4 goals to the good with one chance after another failing to hit the back of the net through poor finishing and good goal keeping.

Much to the surprise of the large crowd Gartcosh took the lead in 23 minutes after good work down the left flank seen the ball swung into the Wanderers box and indecision by both Aldo and Meeky seen the Gartcosh centre forward nip in to head the ball into the empty net.  Game on.

The Wanderers continued to now push for the equalizer and good work from Tiny and Martin Wilson continued to push the Gartcosh team back into their own box providing plenty of ammunition to the front line of Simmy and Tum Tum.

The game swung back in the Wanderers favour in the 30th minute, when a hotly disputed thrown in landed at the feet of Simmy who majestically hit the ball on the turn from an acute angle over the helpless Gartcosh goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

Excellent work in the centre of the park by Stephen McGlinchey – surely the leagues top central midfielder ensured McKellar his midfield partner, was allowed to played higher up the park and join in as a 3rd striker.

The Wanderers took the lead in the 37th minute when a Wanderers corner was cleared by the Gartcosh defence only as far as Wilson.  He carefully delivered the ball to the opposite wing were the late arrival of Tiny seen the ball hit first time across the face of the goals for Aldo to arrive late and put the Wanderers 2-1 and looking good for the second half.

The Wanderers secured the game in the 42nd minute when good work again from Tiny down the left seen his cross hit the arms of Gartcosh defender and McKellar rifling home the resulting penalty to send the Wanderers in 3-1 at the break.

The second half failed to live up to expectations and each team seemed to have run out of ideas on how to impose themselves on the game.  The game turned again on the 70th minute when crazy antics by the Gartcosh central midfielder seen both him and Stephen McGlinchey receive their marching orders for an off the ball incident.

With each team down to 10 men and the Wanderers missing their central midfield linchpin the Gartcosh team came right back into the game and only for good saves from Meeky – one spectacular from a free kick which he managed to put onto the post – the result might have turned out differently.

The wanderers dug deep making a number of changes as they seen out the final 20 minutes of the game looked to hit Gartcosh on the counter attack and on no fewer than 4 occasions were 3 on 1 with the Gartcosh defence.  Captain Martin Tait sailed through the match leading by example and driving the Wanderers forward at every opportunity.

Miss of the season so far is from Aldo who having run the full length of the park received the ball in the box unchallenged and could have rolled the ball into the net managed fire the ball over the bar.

Best game of the season from McLetchie, who for a change done himself justice putting in a game with zero errors.

New management team of David Caldwell and Kevin Tait task at hand is going to be coming up with the right combinations – with the club looking to do well in league and cup competitions it could be a long season so everyone is going to get their chance.

The Wanderers are pleased to announce new signing Mark Maxwell from Maryhill Juniors and Frankie McKever who lists Queens Park and Kilbirnie Layside as his previous clubs.  Both players have been on the radar of the Wanderers from pre-season and are pleased to announce that they have finally got their men.  We wish both players all the best and look forward to seeing them in action.

The Wanderers travel to Law – to play Premier League opposition “Balmore” in the second round of the Scottish Cup.
